Not long ago, many people would have scratched their heads at the notion of e-business and wondered what the Net has to do with business. Because, the Internet was seen as a consumer phenomenon--it was about surfing for information, e-mail, and entertainment. But, for the last three years, IBM has viewed matters differently. We’ve been arguing that the transactions between most traditional business functions will be transferred to the Net.
Frankly, at first we were met with a certain amount of skepticism. But the last six months have brought the networked economy so unmistakably into view that everyone now agrees with us. In fact, in North America, about one out of every eight adults made a purchase over the Web in the closing months of last year. And business transactions between organizations were already 10 times higher than retail transactions.
