科学家认为,隐藏在时间和地域背后的神秘力量很可能是太阳射线。 因为,出生时间和地点不同,实际上对应的是太阳辐射程度的不同。一般来说,赤道获得的辐射最多,而在北半球,辐射通常会在6、7月份才达到高峰。即便是在同一纬度的区域,冬天受到的辐射也要远远低于夏天受到的辐射。这些都是因为地球是圆的,太阳直射地球的位置是随——变化而不断变化的。

就对辐射敏感程度来说,人的生殖细胞的敏感度要高于体细胞,人在胚胎期的敏感度要高于出生后,而且人在胎儿时期所受到的辐射,会对后来的发育和成长造成长久影响。美国研究人员发现,较高的辐射水平会给胚胎和胎儿的免疫系统增加压力,或者会使它们的DNA发生突变,从而使它们更容易患上某些疾病(或者永远不会患有某些疾病),而且这种突变还会对大脑的形成和寿命的长短造成影响。12月出生者之所以活得更久,其原因可能是他们的母亲在3月份怀孕,使他们躲避了比较强烈的辐射。
