朋友实在是一个笼统的词。一般人所说的朋友,多指熟悉到了一定程度的熟人,遇到需要帮忙的事情,彼此间是求得上的。关于这类朋友,前贤常予苛评。克雷洛夫说:“当你遇到困难时,把朋友们找来,你会得到各种好的忠告。可是,只要你一开口提到实际的援助,你最好的朋友也装聋作哑了。”马克·吐温说:“神圣的友谊如此甜蜜、忠贞、稳固而长久,以致能伴随人的整个一生——如果不要求借钱的话。”亚里士多德说得更干脆:“啊,我的朋友,世上并不存在朋友。”我不愿意把人心想象得这么坏,事实上也没有这么坏,我相信只要我的请求是对方力所能及的,我的大多数熟人一定会酌情相助。只是我这个人比较知趣,非到万不得已之时决不愿求人,而真正万不得已的情形是很少的。为了图清静,我也不喜欢把精力耗费在礼尚往来的应酬上。所以,我和一般人的交往常常难以达到所需要的熟悉程度,够不上在这个意义上称作朋友。

现在该说到我对朋友的理解了。我心目中的朋友,既非泛泛之交的熟人,也不必是心心相印的恋人,程度当在两者之间。在这个世界上也有些这样的人,不见面时会互相惦记,见了面能感觉到一种默契,在一起度过一段愉快的时光,他们便是我心目中的朋友了。有时候,这样的朋友会像滚雪球一样聚合,形成一个所谓的圈子。圈子容易给人以错觉,误以为圈中人都是朋友。我也有过一个格调似乎很高的圈子,当时颇陶醉于一次次高朋满座的畅谈,并且以为这样的日子会永远延续下去。未曾料到,由于生活的变故,这个圈子对于我已不复存在。鲍斯威尔笔下的约翰生说:“一个人随着年龄增长,如不结交新朋友,他就会发现只剩下了孤身一人。人应当不断修补自己的友谊。”我以前读到这话很不以为然,现在才悟出其中的辛酸。不过,交朋友责在自然,用不着刻意追求。在寂寞的周末,我心怀感激地想起不多的几位依然互相惦记的老朋友和新朋友,于是平静地享受了我的寂寞。
