李梦登,福建人。乾隆庚寅孝丰知县,不携家室,与同志三数人,惘惘到县。始谒巡抚,门者索金,不应,因持刺不许入。梦登则绳床坐军门,竟日不去,曰:“予吏事见,非有私谒。俟公他出,即舆前白事,奚以门者为?”门者勉为通谒。巡抚察其状,戒之曰:“君悃愊无华饰,甚善然未娴吏事宜亟求通律令能治文书者致幕下庶几佐君不逮。”梦登前曰:“孝丰俸入,岁不过三十金,不能供幕客食。且梦登与偕来者,三数孝廉,皆读书服古,朝夕讲求,宜若可恃。”巡抚哂之。无何,卒用公式劾免,历官才三月也。

梦登居官,出无仪卫,门不设监奴,有质讼,直诣厅事。梦登便为剖析,因而劝谕之,两造皆欢然以解。出县门,终不见一胥吏。胥吏或请事,则曰:“安有子女事父母,转用奴隶勾检者?若辈必欲谋食,盍罢为农,否则请俟我去耳。”县庭无事,辄独行阡陌间,与父老商搉利,或遇俊秀子弟,执手论文,娓娓竟日,县人安之。

梦登罢官也,代者至门,交印讫,长揖而去。问库廪官物,犹前官封识也。稽文案簿籍,曰:“自有主者。”察狱讼,曰:“悉劝平之。”然不自省得谴所由,以书遍抵同官。曰:“梦登为县仅三月,未尝得罪百姓,有事未尝不尽心,然竟坐免,何故?”

梦登罢官,窭甚,不能归,百姓争食之。负贩小民,侵晓,各以所羡果蔬粟米,杂沓投门外,比门启,取给饔飱,亦不辨所从来。然闲居周一岁,未尝有大匮乏。最后,县人醵金为治归计,并制青盖为赠,题名至万人,荣其行。尝受惠梦登者,凡数辈,徒步负担,送梦登抵其家。
